What Is an Ovarian Follicle? (And Why It Matters in Your Menstrual Cycle)

March 20, 2025•1 min read

Let’s talk about something fascinating that happens inside the body every month—ovarian follicles! You may have heard the term at a doctor’s office or in a health article, but what exactly are they?

An ovarian follicle is like a tiny fluid-filled bubble inside the ovary that holds an immature egg. Think of it as a protective little house where an egg lives and matures before it’s ready to be released during ovulation.

Each month, your ovaries start with a group of these follicles, but usually only one of them becomes “the chosen one”—the dominant follicle that will release an egg.

Here’s a breakdown of the different phases the follicle goes through during the menstrual cycle:

🟣 Follicular Phase (Days 1–14, approximately):

  • This phase starts on the first day of your period.

  • Several follicles start to grow in the ovaries, but one grows faster than the rest—that’s the dominant follicle.

  • Inside this follicle, the egg matures, getting ready for its big moment.

  • Hormones like estrogen increase, helping the lining of the uterus build up in case pregnancy happens.

🟡 Ovulation (Around Day 14):

  • When the egg is fully mature, the dominant follicle bursts open and releases the egg—this is ovulation.

  • The egg then travels down the fallopian tube where it might meet sperm and become fertilized.

🔵 Luteal Phase (Days 15–28):

  • After the egg is released, the empty follicle turns into something called the corpus luteum.

  • This structure now produces hormones (mainly progesterone) to keep the uterus lining thick—again, just in case of pregnancy.

  • If pregnancy doesn’t happen, the corpus luteum fades away, hormone levels drop, and the cycle starts over with your next period.

In short, ovarian follicles are crucial players in your reproductive system. They help nurture and release an egg every month—pretty amazing, right?
